AO DAI-LY

This project is a new interpretation of the vietnamese national costume Áo Dài.

Why do we feel dressed up in national costumes most of the time?Is it possible to wear them in your daily life and thus carry a piece of culture with you without appearing costumed?

With these questions in mind, the concept of AO DAI-LY (wordplay: extension Ao Dai to daily) was born. In contrast to the fabrics of the original, which are ostentatious, very colourful and patterned, the idea was to go in the monochrome direction.

The neutral colour choices should be complemented with the help of fine, shiny and transparent fabric details (satin, organza) to enhance the festive character of the áo dài. The national costume in everyday life which also works well as evening wear.

Áo Dài (transl.: long top) consists of a knee- or ankle-length silk dress slit up above the hips on both sides, with long and loose silk trousers usually worn as the bottom.

Look 1: is following the traditional dress pattern of the áo dài in black and looser fit, the bluish satin ribbon for a pop of color - with the asymmetrical organza vest you get the more festive evening wear (Look1.1)

Look 2: is like the first look very true to the traditional cut but short-sleeved and also with the bluish satin ribbon

Look 3: is an interpretation of the áo dài as a light grey two piece-set, consisting of a cropped vest and midi skirt, each piece can also be worn on their own

Look 4: is based on the dress pattern for the traditional male áo dài: a long dark grey vest

Look 5: is the item of look 4 transformed into a dress with a ribbon belt to accentuate the waist

Look 6: is similar to the vest in look 4 but shorter and in black, it can be worn as a tank top or a slipover over long sleeved tops on colder days - for the evening look a midi skirt in organza can be tied around the waist (Look 6.1)

ÁO DÀI XANH

A person’s clothing is an expression of their personal style, but also of their cultural identity and the values of a society.

Áo Dài Xanh – The "Áo Dài" (translated as “long top” and visually describes the form of the garment), vietnam’s elegant traditional dress, is usually crafted from light fabrics such as silk and most commonly worn by women.

"Xanh", the vietnamese word for blue, the color of denim fabric - the durable material of workwear and timeless protagonist in the fashion world. Áo Dài meets blue denim.

This project (my bachelor’s thesis ) explores whether a garment can unite apparent contrasts such as tradition and modernity.

Its aim is to treat cultural symbols with respect while reinterpreting them in a contemporary way, contributing to an intercultural design perspective. The collection focuses on creating unisex garments that flexibly adapt to individual body shapes. Jeans-inspired details such as rivets, buttons, and adjustable straps enable variable sizing, while the Áo Dài’s signature Mandarin collar is preserved in every design.
